Infant care manufacturer Comotomo uses Avient color-matched Ultrason

Infant care manufacturer Comotomo…

Comotomo, a Korean manufacturer of infant care products, uses colored Ultrason P 2010 in its next-generation bottle. The solution concerns an over-molded ring on the bottle's silicone body. This component is made of BASF's polyphenylsulfone Ultrason P 2010, combined with a specific shade of blue developed using Avient's Colorant Chromatics high-temperature color formulation expertise for concentrates and ready-to-use pre-colored plastics. According to the companies, this combination is intended to achieve the desired color without compromising safety parameters. At the same time, the ring provides full structural rigidity, and the colored PPSU used complies with food-contact requirements according to key standards, including FDA, FC and GB.

The release states that the use of Ultrason in baby bottles results from the material's performance properties. These include chemical resistance, dimensional stability and resistance to superheated steam. As a result, the bottle can be cleaned in dishwashers, boiling water, microwave ovens and bottle sterilizers. The Ultrason P 2010 grade also features high heat resistance and good impact strength, which is important during the silicone overmolding process carried out at elevated temperatures and under pressure. As a result, the product combines Comotomo's experience in infant care articles with the material solutions supplied by Avient and BASF.

As Hank Choi, head of Comotomo's R&D center, emphasized: "We are proud to cooperate with Avient and BASF to introduce this next-generation baby bottle to the market. By leveraging our collective expertise on product, material, and colors, we have created a product that meets the critical quality requirements of baby bottles. It was Avient's and BASF's strong track record that drove our decision to approach them, and they impressively demonstrated their commitment to meeting the highest standards for food safety and product quality, making them the ideal partners for Comotomo." The new bottle is manufactured at Comotomo's plant in South Korea and is currently available on the Chinese market.

Ultrason application scope

Ultrason is the trade name for BASF's material range comprising polyethersulfone, Ultrason E, polysulfone, Ultrason S, and polyphenylsulfone, Ultrason P. This high-performance thermoplastic is used to manufacture water filtration membranes, durable and safe household products and catering applications, as well as lightweight components for the automotive and aerospace sectors. According to BASF, materials from the Ultrason family can replace thermosets, metals and ceramics in many applications due to their performance profile.

Avient and BASF cooperate in developing colored grades of Ultrason high-performance polymers, combining base materials with Avient's expertise in color formulations for high-temperature applications. As a result, customers from various industries are to receive a broad choice of color variants along with technical support.
