At Battery Show Europe in Stuttgart, SABIC is presenting its expanding portfolio of specialty thermoplastics designed for energy storage systems and power electronics. At booth 3-E51, the company is showcasing materials used in electric vehicle battery components and power conversion systems. The display includes both new material grades and examples of specific parts, ranging from housings and module frames to insulating films and components operating at high voltage. According to the company, the aim of the presentation is to show a complete materials ecosystem for EV batteries, covering solutions from the battery pack to power components.
SABIC is placing particular emphasis on the newly introduced LNP Thermocomp OFM compounds, intended for use in highly loaded, high-voltage electric drivetrains and power modules. These materials are based on PPS resin, polyphenylene sulfide, and expand the company’s offering for the electromobility sector. According to the manufacturer, the new compounds address growing requirements for voltage and power in modern electrical systems. Sergi Monros, Vice President of Specialties BU at SABIC, said: “Our customers are under pressure to deliver EV systems that transfer more power, operate at lower temperature and perform more reliably. We continue to expand our portfolio of specialty materials with solutions such as the new high-voltage LNP Thermocomp OFM compounds and the broad range of material solutions presented here. From charging to discharging, we want to help engineers improve performance, safety and processability across energy storage systems and power electronics.”
SABIC’s new LNP Thermocomp compound series is well suited for highly loaded, high-voltage applications in electric drivetrains and power modules, such as insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) power switching devices
Cross-section of materials and components
To demonstrate the scope of its offering, SABIC is displaying a full-scale replica of an electric vehicle battery pack together with selected individual battery components. These include a lightweight honeycomb-structure energy absorber made from Noryl GTX resin, a cell retainer and module frame made from LNP Konduit compound, as well as an electrical insulation film extruded from Noryl NHP resin.
The display also includes solutions extending beyond EV battery components themselves. The company is showcasing high-voltage capacitors made from Elcres HTV150A film, an electric vehicle inverter housing molded from Ultem resin, and a high-voltage header using LNP Konduit compound. According to SABIC, the materials on display are intended to support improvements in performance, reliability, functionality and safety in systems responsible for power generation, high-voltage current conversion and energy storage.
