On July 17, 2026, Südpack Medica officially opened its significantly expanded plant in Coulmer, France. The ceremony was attended by representatives of local authorities and administration, project partners, the plant’s neighbors, employees, members of the management board, the company’s owners, and the media. The event marked an important stage in the company’s development and summarized an investment that was launched on September 19, 2023, with a groundbreaking ceremony. At the time of its launch, it was Südpack’s largest single investment project. After nearly three years, the site, certified to ISO 13485 for medical devices and diagnostics and ISO 15378 for primary packaging materials under GMP, now offers increased production capacity for high-quality primary packaging for pharmaceuticals and sterile barrier systems for medical device and diagnostic applications. As part of the expansion, the ISO Class 7 and 8 cleanroom production areas were nearly doubled.
Production at the Coulmer plant is focused on the MedGuard line, which includes pouch systems and other packaging concepts for applications such as implants, surgical kits, wound care products, and surgical textiles. The site also manufactures header bags designed specifically for large-volume medical devices that typically undergo ethylene oxide, ETO, sterilization. The expansion confirms the strategic importance of the Orne region for Südpack and the company’s commitment to developing its operations in Europe. It is also a direct response to steadily growing demand from the medical device, pharmaceutical, and sterile products industries for films and packaging solutions that meet the highest requirements for quality, process control, safety, particulate cleanliness, sterility, and regulatory compliance. At the same time, the investment is long term in nature and is intended to support the development of solutions adapted to the future requirements of the life sciences market.
Importance of the investment for the product offering and regulatory compliance
According to the information provided by the company, the Coulmer site plays an important role in developing PPWR-compliant solutions for the life sciences sector, including recyclable mono-material mono-PE concepts intended to replace conventional PA/PE laminates. For Südpack, the expansion means above all strengthening the quality of customer service. The investment now enables higher-volume production under cleanroom conditions across the entire process chain, from film manufacturing to the finished pouch. This is intended to ensure consistently high and repeatable quality, security of supply, and reliability.
During the official opening, Südpack’s management, owners Johannes Remmele and Carolin Grimbacher, CEO Thorsten Seehars, COO Christoph Angstl, and Site Manager Samuel Wilquin welcomed Südpack Advisory Board member Karl-Josef Keller, Board of Directors member Reto Garzetti, employees, project partners, representatives of the local media, and senior political and administrative officials. Among the invited guests were Thierry Liger, Member of the French National Assembly for Orne’s 2nd constituency, Marc Salmon, Mayor of Gacé, François Roumier, Deputy Mayor of Coulmer, and Chloé Jockel of the Communauté de communes des Vallées d’Auge et du Merlerault, CDC VAM.
