Henkel Adhesive Technologies announced a strategic cooperation with Ravenwood Packaging to support linerless labelling with dedicated hotmelt pressure-sensitive adhesives engineered for Ravenwood equipment. The development targets consistent, high-speed application across logistics, weight scaling and fresh food packaging. By removing the liner layer typical of standard labels, the approach aims to reduce material use and weight, which the companies link to lower waste and carbon footprint. The adhesives are specified for use with Ravenwood Com500 Coaters and Nobac Applicators and are presented as a core element of the company’s Circle of Linerless ecosystem, which combines materials, machinery and services for linerless operation. Performance attributes highlighted include coating quality, clean converting, controlled release from the reverse side of the board, and an adhesion-to-cohesion balance suited to high-throughput lines and cold chain conditions. The partners also reference recyclability outcomes, noting Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation accreditation for Ravenwood’s linerless labels and a reported pulp yield above 93.75%.
Adhesive development for Ravenwood linerless systems
At the center of the collaboration is a set of exclusive hotmelt pressure-sensitive adhesives developed by Henkel for Ravenwood’s linerless labelling systems. According to the companies, the formulations are designed to deliver coating uniformity, clean converting and reliable application, with integration to Ravenwood’s Com500 Coaters and Nobac Applicators.
The adhesives are described as providing strong coatability and chill performance, reliable release from the board’s reverse side and the removal of liners from the process. These characteristics are intended to support consistent, high-speed labelling on Ravenwood labelers and to address requirements associated with cold chain logistics for perishables.
Circularity claims and recyclability accreditation
Standard labels typically comprise four layers, with the liner accounting for up to 40 percent of the total weight. Linerless formats remove this layer, reducing both layer count and weight. The partners state that Henkel’s adhesives enable Ravenwood linerless labels to achieve Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation recyclability accreditation and a pulp yield of more than 93.75 percent. Henkel positions this outcome as aligned with its science-based approach to sustainability.
"Our collaboration with Ravenwood is a testament to Henkel’s dedication to driving sustainable transformation in packaging," said Philippe Daval, Global Market Strategy Manager for Specialty Tapes & Labels at Henkel. "By combining our adhesive expertise with Ravenwood’s linerless technology, we are delivering a solution that reduces waste, lowers CO2 emissions, and supports recyclability at scale."
