BASF Coatings announced an expanded collaboration with Xiaomi to jointly develop 100 exclusive car paint colors within three years. The program is intended to advance innovation and personalization in automotive color design and to shape the visual language of smart mobility. BASF Coatings has been Xiaomi’s coatings partner since 2023 and, for the first batch of new colors, supported the process end to end from research and development to mass production. The scope covers full-layer coating solutions, from e-coat and primer to basecoat and clearcoat.
The initial palette includes “Velocity Red,” “Dawn Pink (Matte),” “Nightfall Rose,” and “Buttercup Yellow,” as well as “Amethyst Purple,” which is created using BASF’s dual-layer clearcoat technology to achieve a crystal-like finish on Xiaomi’s custom models. According to the companies, BASF Coatings provided materials and technical input across layers to meet aesthetic targets while aligning with production requirements.

Technical highlights of the first color batch
- Velocity Red: customized red clearcoat from BASF Coatings with 20% higher color saturation
- Dawn Pink (Matte): matte clearcoat for a sculpted, foggy texture
- Nightfall Rose: warm-cool contrast with aluminum and pearlescent pigments for color-shifting effects
- Buttercup Yellow: triple pigment layering for high saturation
- Amethyst Purple: ProGloss 2K and ProGloss Plus 2K dual-layer clearcoat locks light for a mirror-like, crystal effect
Coating systems supplied for Xiaomi SU7 and YU7
BASF Coatings provides full-layer solutions for Xiaomi SU7 and YU7 models, including CathoGuard 800 e-coat, SecuBloc primer, ColorBrite waterborne basecoat and ProGloss clearcoat. The system is designed to deliver an elegant appearance alongside performance characteristics specified by the automaker.
