Avient expands its Nymax REC…

Avient Corporation is expanding its portfolio of Nymax REC recycled nylon compounds with the Nymax REC 6000 High Impact series. The new line comprises impact-modified materials aimed at manufacturers seeking sustainable, high-performance polyamide-based solutions that can support circular economy goals and reduce product carbon footprint while maintaining performance comparable to grades produced from prime raw materials.

Growing regulatory requirements and sustainability policies in the automotive, construction and consumer goods sectors are increasing the demand for engineering plastics with a reduced environmental footprint. In response to these needs, Avient is introducing the Nymax REC 6000 High Impact series as an alternative to prime polyamide compounds. The use of a high proportion of post-industrial recycled content helps reduce the consumption of fossil-based resources while maintaining the performance required in technical applications. The company emphasizes that the new formulations are designed to deliver impact resistance, durability and dimensional stability at a level comparable to corresponding prime-based grades.

Scope of the Nymax REC 6000 High Impact series

The new series comprises a total of 22 formulations based on recycled polyamide. The portfolio includes eight unfilled grades and 14 glass fiber reinforced grades with glass content of up to 30%. This diversity allows the material to be matched to specific design and mechanical requirements, including stiffness, impact resistance and dimensional stability of parts.

All grades in the Nymax REC 6000 High Impact series are modified to increase impact resistance, with the impact level tailored to a wide range of operating temperatures and service conditions. Depending on the grade, the share of post-industrial recycled (PIR) content in the materials ranges from 42% to 93%. The use of PIR enables waste generated in processing or component manufacturing operations to be reintroduced into the value chain as a raw material for the production of new polyamide compounds.

Carbon footprint reduction and regulatory compliance support

Avient states that the new Nymax REC 6000 High Impact grades can deliver up to an 83% reduction in carbon footprint compared to corresponding prime-based versions. This assessment is supported by Avient's product carbon footprint (PCF) calculator, which is TÜV certified and compliant with ISO 14067. The tool is intended to enable customers to quantify the impact of using recycled content on the environmental footprint of components and to facilitate reporting of sustainability indicators.

The introduction of the Nymax REC 6000 High Impact series is also intended to help users meet increasing regulatory requirements related to sustainable sourcing of raw materials and the recycled content in finished plastic parts. The ability to use grades with a high share of recycled content while maintaining the required mechanical performance may be particularly important in segments where guidelines or targets for minimum recycled content in plastic components are in place.

Application areas and performance requirements

The target application areas for the new materials are in the automotive, construction and consumer goods sectors. In automotive, potential uses include structural and functional parts in the engine compartment and vehicle interior, where a combination of stiffness, impact resistance and dimensional stability over a wide temperature range is required. In construction, recycled polyamide compounds can be used, among others, in fastening elements, equipment housings and components exposed to mechanical loads. In the consumer goods sector, resistance to damage in everyday use and the possibility of designing parts with complex geometries are key.

According to the company, the use of Nymax REC 6000 High Impact recycled nylon compounds is intended to meet these requirements without significant trade-offs in mechanical performance compared to materials based on prime feedstocks. Both the choice of polyamide base and glass fiber content, as well as precise impact modification for a specific temperature range and operating conditions, are important.
