Tomra Recycling awarded EcoVadis Platinum medal for sustainability

Tomra Recycling awarded EcoVadis…

Tomra Sorting GmbH, the German legal entity and headquarters of Tomra Recycling, has received the Platinum medal from EcoVadis, one of the most widely used global platforms for assessing corporate sustainability performance. With an overall score of 87 out of 100 points, Tomra Recycling has ranked among the top 1% of companies in the EcoVadis network worldwide over the past 12 months. For Tomra Recycling, a provider of sensor-based sorting technology solutions for recycling, this represents an improvement of 11 points compared with the previous year and a move from Gold to Platinum level. This assessment followed the official validation of Tomra's net-zero climate targets by the Science Based Targets initiative. It confirms the company's position as a global leader in environmental and ethical performance.

Scope of the EcoVadis assessment and areas of improvement

The Platinum medal was awarded following a detailed, evidence-based evaluation of four key pillars: environment, labor and human rights, ethics and sustainable procurement. In the environmental area, the evaluation covered carbon footprint and activities related to the circular economy. The labor and human rights pillars included diversity, equity and inclusion, as well as occupational safety. In the area of ethics, the assessment covered, among other aspects, anti-corruption measures and data security. The sustainable procurement pillar focused on risks in the supply chain.

According to the company, the advancement to Platinum level was made possible by increased transparency, improved corporate governance and strengthened sustainability practices. Tomra Recycling emphasizes that its actions go beyond meeting minimum compliance requirements and are aimed at achieving measurable effects across the global value chain.

Lars Enge, Executive Vice President and Head of Tomra Recycling, comments: "Sustainability is at the heart of Tomra Recycling's strategy. This Platinum rating is a testament to the dedication of our teams and our ongoing efforts to create long-term value for our customers, our employees and the environment. Moving from Silver to Gold, and then to Platinum in just three years, shows that we are not just setting ambitious goals, but delivering measurable results. Being in the top 1% of all organizations assessed by EcoVadis in 2025 is a strong validation of our mission to lead the resource revolution."

From strategy to measurable impact

Tomra Recycling indicates that the achieved result is the effect of a focused transition from policy to action over the past 12 months. The priority areas covered four key directions.

Climate action

Following the validation of climate targets by the Science Based Targets initiative, the roadmap towards alignment with the 1.5°C global warming limit has been updated. The company highlights the shift from declared ambitions to verified, science-based emissions reduction targets.

Ecodesign and life cycle assessment

In the ecodesign area, internal competence has been built to conduct product life cycle analyses. The first LCA studies concern high-volume Autosort units, enabling precise measurement of the environmental footprint of equipment from the production stage through to end of life. Such data can provide a basis for further design optimisation and for assessing the impact of sorting solutions on the value chain of plastics recycling and other material streams.

Supply chain integrity

In the supply chain area, Tomra Recycling has strengthened supplier assessment processes by introducing higher requirements for environmental performance and ethical sourcing. The objective is to build a more resilient and transparent value chain, which is relevant for machinery manufacturers, plastics processors and recycling plant operators working with the company.

Internal development and occupational safety

In parallel, investments in internal organisational development are continuing. These include enhanced monitoring of health and safety indicators and expanded training programmes. The aim is to build a culture of safety and inclusion, which is reflected in the labor and human rights pillar assessed by EcoVadis.

Tomra Recycling notes that the EcoVadis Platinum medal provides customers with additional confirmation that they are working with a supplier whose technologies and solutions are based on a responsible and transparent business model.

Pathway to net-zero targets

Achieving the Platinum rating is an important milestone for Tomra, but the company remains focused on its long-term objectives related to leading the so-called resource revolution, transitioning to a fully circular business model and building a safe, fair and inclusive working environment. On the pathway towards net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, the company has declared a 55% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2033 and a 90% reduction by 2050. For Scope 3, the target is to reduce emissions intensity by 62% by 2033 and by 97% by 2050. All climate targets are measured against a 2022 baseline.

In addition, Tomra aims to ensure that by 2030 at least 90% of materials used in new products will be sustainable materials. Another target is to ensure that at least 50% of new products are circular at end of life, meaning that they can be effectively used within the circular economy, including through material recycling of components.

The actions and targets outlined indicate the integration of environmental and ethical requirements into operations and into the development of sorting technologies that are used, among others, in plastics and packaging recycling plants. In this context, the EcoVadis Platinum medal represents external confirmation of the direction of the adopted strategy.
