Storopack advances Auto.protect for automated packaging

Storopack advances Auto.protect…

Storopack is expanding its packaging automation portfolio by introducing the Auto.protect module for fully automatic product protection in cartons. The solution from the Working Automation division combines a vision system with an AI-powered application to detect voids in the package and, based on that, select an appropriate packaging scenario. The system captures the carton size, passes the data to the software, and then determines where and how much material to apply and how to place it to achieve the required protective effect.

A critical aspect of the process is keeping the box stationary between imaging, data processing, and the actual fill. This prevents the identified voids from changing due to product shift, enabling precise metering and placement of protective material. In practice, exactly the amount of protective packaging required to stabilize and cushion the load is used, for example in the form of air cushions or paper void fill.

The void fill is placed in the carton fully automatically in line with the algorithm’s decision. The module performs both top and bottom filling, as well as a block & brace scenario aimed at immobilizing the product in the package. In addition, the system can be extended with end-of-line quality inspection using the vision system. In this variant, the packing result is assessed and, if necessary, an additional amount of material is dispensed until full product protection is achieved.

Scenarios and quality control

Auto.protect supports three main operating modes: top fill, bottom fill, and block & brace. In top fill, material is fed from above to evenly occupy the space above the product. Bottom fill directs material to the lower areas of the carton to stabilize the base of the load first. The block & brace scenario focuses on blocking and supporting components to limit movement inside the package during transport. All modes are selected and parameterized based on image analysis and AI-defined rules.

Integrating the optional quality control with the vision system makes it possible to verify the effectiveness of the scenario after packing is complete. On this basis, the system can decide to add the required amount of void fill to complete the protection process. This setup promotes repeatability and predictable outcomes amid dynamic carton size changes and diverse product configurations.

Deployment options and material selection

The offering includes a new standard Auto.protect module variant as well as solutions configured to user requirements. Protective material is selected for the specific application, enabling the use of, among others, air cushions or paper void fill depending on the nature and sensitivity of the packed goods. The goal is a complete, fully automated protection process aligned with the adopted packaging strategy.
