MedGuard as an integrated sterile packaging system

MedGuard as an integrated…

Südpack Medica has presented MedGuard as a fully integrated packaging system intended for the design and implementation of sterile barrier solutions for manufacturers in the medical technology, pharmaceutical and life sciences sectors. The concept is based on combining material structures with process expertise in order to create validated packaging solutions focused on performance, product and process safety, and improved environmental performance throughout the packaging life cycle. The company emphasizes that instead of supplying individual materials, it delivers a complete solution including bottom webs, lidding films or pouch systems, as well as production and application support and a structured assessment of sustainability parameters. The objective is to achieve consistent and reliable performance throughout the entire packaging life cycle, from development and qualification to commercial scale-up. As the manufacturer states, "It is more than packaging. It is a system".

In practice, this system-based approach is intended to address the core requirements of the healthcare sector, including sterile barrier systems, reproducible sealing processes, regulatory compliance, and growing demand for packaging concepts designed with circularity in mind.

Material selection and packaging development support

One element of the platform is Product Navigator, a tool supporting material selection in an increasingly complex application and materials environment. The solution makes it possible to assess suitable material combinations based on specific application requirements and typical sterilization methods such as steam, EtO or gamma radiation. According to the company, this is intended to accelerate development and reduce risk during packaging design.

The MedGuard portfolio includes flexible and rigid packaging systems, from robust thermoforming films to pouch and bag solutions. Lidding materials are produced in certified cleanroom environments, which is intended to support clean production requirements and the validation of sterile packaging, including in accordance with ISO 11607.

Value chain cooperation and laboratory capabilities

To ensure compatibility between system elements, Südpack Medica works with selected suppliers of paper and lidding materials as well as packaging machine manufacturers. This cooperation is intended to enable precise configuration, testing and optimization of sealing parameters and package opening behavior for equipment platforms used in industrial packaging production.

The company also points to its extensive laboratory facilities, which make it possible to accurately measure the mechanical, thermal and functional properties of films. This is intended to support customer-specific requirements and validation processes related to packaging implementation.

Technical trials and environmental assessment

Customers can also carry out sealing trials of MedGuard films in combination with various lidding materials at the company's technology center in Ochsenhausen. These trials are used for targeted evaluation of sealing ranges, peel performance and process robustness, which is intended to support packaging development before moving to commercial scale. Where required, Südpack Medica also coordinates joint optimization trials with customers and their machine suppliers.

An important part of the MedGuard strategy is also the environmental aspect. Südpack Medica's sustainability team carries out, among other things, screening LCAs in order to quickly prepare environmental assessments based on secondary data. According to the company, this is intended to support the development of packaging systems with high environmental performance, without compromising safety, functionality or regulatory compliance.
