Mondi has launched re/loop FlowWrap, a packaging solution designed for wet wipes. The material was developed for applications in the home care and personal care sectors and is intended to support the transition from currently used non-recyclable laminates to structures more aligned with circular economy principles. The new packaging is a form-fill-and-seal, FFS, solution made of mono-polypropylene and contains 35% post-consumer recycled material. According to the manufacturer, the material is suitable for mechanical recycling of polypropylene in line with CEFLEX D4ACE guidelines. The solution is intended for applications requiring a tailored barrier, including baby products, cosmetics and household wipes.
The company states that extensive internal testing and consumer research demonstrated performance comparable to packaging based on virgin raw materials. In particular, it pointed to reliable sealing, the required barrier protection and ease of processing in wet wipes production. An important feature of the solution is also its compatibility with existing packaging lines, which is intended to enable implementation of the material without the need for major conversion of the machinery base.
Importance in the context of PPWR
As stated in the information provided, from 1 January 2030 the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, PPWR, sets a target for this category of plastic packaging under which it is to contain 35% post-consumer recycled plastic content. For this reason, re/loop FlowWrap is intended to support brands and packaging manufacturers in preparing for future regulatory requirements while maintaining product protection and production efficiency.
Tests on packaging lines
External tests carried out on IMA Ilapak equipment confirmed, according to Mondi, the material's high performance at very high line speeds during wet wipes packaging. The solution was also presented at the Index trade fair, held from 19 to 22 May, where Mondi and IMA Ilapak demonstrated the use of re/loop FlowWrap on packaging lines. The company emphasizes that these activities reflect its approach to packaging material development in cooperation with machine manufacturers and customers, as well as the use of post-consumer recycled materials in response to changing market needs and legal requirements.
Alessandro D’Agostino, Business Development Manager Home and Personal Care at Mondi Consumer Flexibles, said: "By launching this product, we are showing that wet wipes packaging can become more circular without losing quality and functionality. By combining a material designed with post-consumer recycling in mind and good machinability, we help customers transition more quickly to more sustainable packaging solutions while maintaining operational efficiency."
