SABIC launches novel PCR-based…

SABIC has launched the new LNP Elcrin DC0051RC1 compound, containing 75% post-consumer recycled, PCR, content. According to the company, the material is intended to support circularity goals while maintaining high performance characteristics. This is SABIC's first PCR-based carbon fiber-reinforced compound. The material is formulated with polycarbonate, PC, resin. According to the manufacturer, it provides very good dimensional stability, high modulus and UL94 V0 flame retardancy in thin-wall sections, which makes it suitable for consumer electronics housings.

Sergi Monros, vice president of SABIC's Specialties BU, said: "SABIC supports customers by developing new materials that enhance circularity. However, we do more than incorporate recycled, upcycled or bio-based content into our specialty thermoplastics. Our formulation experts also achieve high levels of performance, aesthetics and processability. Our new LNP Elcrin compound is an example, combining a high percentage of recycled content with many desirable properties. Our goal is to help customers improve circularity without sacrificing quality."

Properties for consumer electronics applications

For the LNP Elcrin DC0051RC1 compound, SABIC developed a new formulation intended to support circularity goals while maintaining key mechanical properties and flame-retardant performance. The company notes that incorporating recycled material while preserving flame-retardant properties presents a formulation challenge. In this case, a UL94 V0 rating was achieved at a thickness of 0.8 mm.

In addition to enabling lightweighting through thin-wall design, the material is said to offer dimensional stability and low warpage, which are important for laptop housings and other large structural components.

Material composition and availability

In addition to improving circularity through the use of 75% PCR, the compound features non-chlorinated and non-brominated flame-retardant chemistry. According to SABIC, this approach may help reduce health risks and negative environmental impacts.

LNP Elcrin DC0051RC1 is now commercially available globally.
