Mondi developed bumper packaging with Ovoko

Mondi developed bumper packaging…

Mondi started cooperation with Ovoko, an e-commerce platform operating in the automotive sector, to develop a solution for transporting car bumpers. The project concerned a product group that places different demands than typical shipments handled in online trade. Bumpers are components with large dimensions, irregular shape and increased susceptibility to damage during transport. According to the information provided by the companies, the previously used packaging was costly and at the same time did not provide sufficient protection, which led to product damage and additional operational burdens. In response, Mondi used heavy-duty solutions from its automotive portfolio and adapted them to the geometry of the transported component. The aim was to reduce empty space inside the package, lower material consumption and improve product protection in the supply chain.

According to the companies, the result was a 42% reduction in unit packaging cost, as well as increased operational efficiency and more economical use of materials. After real-life testing, the solution was implemented for use, and the first order was completed within two weeks. The project shows that packaging requirements in e-commerce concern not only small and lightweight parcels, but also large spare parts that require a tailored packaging design.

Adapting the design to product specifics

The key element of the developed solution was the precise fit of the packaging to the shape of the car bumper. This approach made it possible to reduce free space inside the package, which is important both from the perspective of product protection and material consumption. Corrugated board was used, and an existing solution previously applied in automotive applications was adapted.

Dmitrijus Curkinas, Regional Sales Manager at Mondi Corrugated Poland, said: "Sometimes the best solution is the simplest one. By properly adapting an existing, proven solution, we were able to quickly deliver a reliable and cost-effective corrugated packaging solution that met Ovoko's expectations."

From the end user's perspective, ease of assembly, adequate strength and cost reduction were important. Agnius Skudutis, Packaging Project Manager at Ovoko, said: "We needed packaging that would be easy to assemble, cost-effective and strong enough to provide appropriate protection for the products we ship. Mondi listened carefully to our needs and proposed a solution that allowed us to reduce costs while increasing the level of product protection."

Importance for e-commerce logistics

The release points out that the project goes beyond the standard approach to packaging for online trade, which is usually associated with small and simple shipments. In this case, the solution was developed for a large automotive component that requires suitable protection during transport.

Dawid Galusiński, eCommerce Sales Manager at Mondi Group, emphasized: "In e-commerce, not only delivery speed matters, but also product safety at every stage of its journey to the customer. In the case of large and demanding components such as car bumpers, properly designed packaging ensures that the product reaches the buyer intact, which directly supports building long-term customer trust."

According to Mondi, combining experience in packaging for the automotive industry with knowledge of e-commerce requirements makes it possible to develop solutions that combine product protection with cost optimisation, also for components with large dimensions and complex geometry.
