Krill Design has been selected as a finalist in the Formes de Luxe Awards 2025 in the Novel Materials category with ReKrill, a biopolymer obtained from by-products of the agri-food industry. At the competition, the company is presenting cosmetic packaging comprising a jar and cap manufactured from ReKrill Orange, the biopolymer derived from orange by-products. The awards ceremony took place on Monday evening, 29 September, during Luxe Pack Monaco, held from 29 September to 1 October 2025 at the Grimaldi Forum, in a setting dedicated to excellence in packaging. Formes de Luxe annually recognises innovative advances in luxury packaging that combine aesthetics, functionality and sustainability. ReKrill is produced through Krill Design's proprietary process that converts streams such as orange peels, coffee grounds and hazelnut shells into functional pellets suitable for conventional plastics processing. The material is designed to meet the requirements of high-end applications while addressing circularity, and all candidate products are on show during the fair for brands, designers and manufacturers to evaluate first-hand.
Novel materials category and jury criteria
Every year, the Formes de Luxe competition rewards the best innovations in the luxury packaging sector, promoting cutting-edge materials and solutions that combine aesthetics, functionality and sustainability. The Novel Materials category is dedicated to creators of new-generation materials with potential for luxury applications. Entries are assessed by a jury of experts against criteria including innovation, technical challenges, quality, aesthetic appeal and sustainability.
ReKrill: process, properties and processing
ReKrill results from Krill Design's technology that transforms food by-products into functional pellets that can be processed by conventional methods, including injection molding, rotational molding and 3D printing. According to the company, the formulations match the mechanical and thermal performance of traditional ABS and PP, while remaining completely compostable and biodegradable even in the marine environment without releasing microplastics. The material can be customized in color, texture and sensory qualities without requiring modifications to existing processing equipment. The company reports a 67 percent reduction in CO2 emissions per kilogram compared to fossil-based plastics.
"Our participation with ReKrill in the Formes de Luxe Awards," said Ivan Calimani, CEO and founder of Krill Design, "emphasises Krill Design’s commitment to creating materials that promote a sustainable transition in the high-end packaging supply chain. Packaging manufacturers and luxury brands that choose ReKrill are taking a step forward in reducing their environmental impact, promoting a new idea of responsible and truly sustainable luxury."
