DuPont introduces Biomax PTT

DuPont introduces Biomax PTT DuPont Packaging & Industrial Polymers announced the introduction of Biomax PTT, which contains up to 35 percent renewably sourced content for packaging applications. Biomax PTT 1100 is especially suitable for use in injectionmolded containers, cosmetic packaging and other parts where polyesters are used.

The new, proprietary injection moldable, non-reinforced polyester type resin is being launched at InterPack 2008, in Düsseldorf, Germany. This introduction supports the company`s strategy for creating high performance packaging polymers with a renewable content of at least 20 percent as verified by ASTM carbon dating. These products are designed to either meet or exceed the performance of equivalent petroleum-derived products and add to the growing DuPont suite of sustainable materials for the packaging industry.

Plastics made from petrochemicals deliver high performance in packaging, and use depletable petroleum resources as their primary feedstock. Biomax? PTT provides high-performance plastic packaging partially made with renewable bio-based feedstocks.

- Bio processes offer the potential for a lower environmental footprint than petrochemical processes - said Dr Carol Casarino, global technology manager -
Sustainable Materials. - Our sustainable packaging initiatives comprise new and innovative approaches to reducing, removing and recycling. The introduction of Biomax PTT 1100 offers the packaging industry a highly durable, polyester-like performance solution that performs well in demanding applications without compromising performance or package aesthetics.

Biomax PTT 1100 attributes include good gloss, stiffness and colorability. It is not affected by exposure to common liquid formulas, has high tensile and yield strength, and is opaque to translucent in its natural state. Performance is similar to polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Biomax PTT is a high-performance copolymer of 1,3 bio-propanediol and terephthalic acid. One of the primary monomers in Biomax PTT is Bio-PDO, which consumes 40 percent less energy than petroleum-based 1,3 propanediol (PDO).

Biomax PTT is a DuPont developed technology, manufactured and marketed exclusively by DuPont. Biomax PTT 1100 will be marketed and distributed globally.

Biomax is the brand that represents the DuPont Packaging & Industrial Polymers family of renewably sourced resins and modifiers of new bio-based plastics. Biomax Strong modifier, a toughener for bio-based biodegradable PLA, the first modifier for bio-based materials was introduced in early 2007. Biomax PTT is the first renewably sourced resin from DuPont utilizing Bio- PDO technology. Biomax TPS is another renewably sourced thermoplastic starch offering also available from DuPont.
