Wittmann has expanded the Airmould starter package with a new plus version, which, in addition to the existing modules, also includes a pressure generator. The solution is intended to simplify the start-up of internal gas pressure technology and lower the entry barrier for processors interested in this process. Airmould technology is used to reduce raw material consumption, lower part weight and minimize warpage, sink marks and shrinkage. As a result, it makes it possible to combine high surface quality with cost efficiency and lower material consumption. As part of the package, the user receives a central unit for two pressure control modules, an IoT-compliant pressure control module, a manual control unit and, in the new version, also a pressure generator. All package variants are offered together with support from Wittmann engineers in the field of application technology consulting. The company carries out simulations and feasibility analyses to assess the suitability of parts for the use of internal gas pressure technology. If a decision is made to implement this technology, Wittmann is responsible for both configuring the equipment and commissioning the system.
An additional advantage of the solution is the possibility of quickly adapting existing production processes. According to the manufacturer, in many cases it is possible to use existing molds for the Airmould process without any modifications. Typical fields of application include automotive components such as handles, gardening equipment and technical parts with bulges. In the Airmould process, nitrogen is injected into a partially or completely filled mold cavity. The pressurized gas forms a bubble in the central part of the melt, which counteracts shrinkage on the outer surface of the molding and thus eliminates sink marks. Reducing the amount of plastic material while simultaneously increasing the hollow space inside the part makes it possible to effectively produce lightweight components with short cycle times while maintaining good surface quality.
Compatibility with injection molding machines of different brands
Wittmann emphasizes the modular design of the Airmould packages. Individual technology modules can be used via Euromap 62 on any injection molding machine, regardless of its brand or model. When connected to a Wittmann injection molding machine, the Airmould system can be fully integrated into the production cell via Wittmann 4.0 and operated from the machine display.
The company's concept is based on supplying a complete solution, including nitrogen generation. The N2easy nitrogen generators developed and manufactured by Wittmann extract gas from ambient air and can simultaneously supply several consumers. According to the manufacturer, the solution becomes economically viable at a daily nitrogen consumption equivalent to a single gas cylinder.
Technical trials and event for processors
Interested processors can evaluate the capabilities of Airmould technology in Wittmann's technical laboratories. At the SKZ center in Würzburg, Wittmann injection molding machines equipped with Airmould technology are also available for application trials and training.
The company also invites participants to the Wittmann Expert Day dedicated to foam injection molding and internal gas pressure technology, which will take place on 10 September 2026 at the Wittmann site in Meinerzhagen.
