Gerresheimer automates logistics with Mecalux in the USA

Gerresheimer automates logistics…

Gerresheimer is modernising its production and logistics base in Peachtree City, Georgia, focusing on the automation of warehouse processes in cooperation with Mecalux. As part of the investment, two automated pallet warehouses will be built at the site to support the handling of growing demand for medical products in the United States. For a company operating in the medical sector, on-time deliveries to healthcare facilities are of fundamental importance, which is why the expansion of warehouse infrastructure has been linked with the modernisation of all internal logistics. The project also fits into the broader strategy of strengthening Gerresheimer's presence in the North American market and pursuing growth based on process automation.

According to the company, the investment in Peachtree City includes not only new warehouse solutions, but also the creation of more than 400 jobs, the implementation of next-generation clean rooms and the launch of highly automated production lines. Tobias Gebhard, Global Director Automation Smart Factory Medical Systems at Gerresheimer, indicates that the expansion of the site is an important element in strengthening the company's presence in the United States and moving closer to customers in the healthcare sector. After years of relying on manual material flow processes, the company decided to automate them in order to improve precision, safety and operational efficiency.

Gebhard emphasises: "The expansion of our facility in Peachtree City is a key step in strengthening our presence in the United States and allows us to be even closer to our customers in the healthcare sector." He also adds: "In an environment where every item must be handled with the utmost care, automation provides a new dimension of control and reliability."

Role of the automated warehouses and WMS system

The central element of the project consists of two automated pallet warehouses integrated with Mecalux's Easy WMS software. The system manages the movement of more than 30 stock keeping units coming from the production lines. The software assigns storage locations to individual products based on demand levels and then sends stacker cranes instructions for their movement.

This operating model is intended to ensure immediate product availability whenever needed and full real-time control over every stored unit. In practice, this means a more orderly material flow and a reduction in the share of manual operations in storage and internal handling.

Importance of the investment for the Peachtree City facility

The project carried out jointly by Gerresheimer and Mecalux is intended to provide the foundation for the further development of more efficient and innovative logistics at a facility serving the demanding medical sector. From the manufacturer's perspective, this means preparing infrastructure for long-term growth while maintaining the high service and safety standards required in the production and distribution of medical products.

The investment also shows that the automation of storage and material flow management is becoming one of the key tools for increasing operational reliability in the medical industry, where product availability and process control directly affect the continuity of supplies to healthcare facilities.
