Freudenberg Performance Materials has issued its first standalone sustainability report, marking a new level of disclosure for the technical textiles business. Until now, information about the company’s environmental performance appeared only within the sustainability report of its parent, the Freudenberg Group. The new publication concentrates on the unit’s operations and priorities, providing a focused view of targets, measures and results.
Sustainability at Freudenberg is described as integral to the company’s 175-year history and aligned with the UN Brundtland definition. The business aims to minimize waste and emissions while reducing the use of energy, materials and water. A long-term objective is CO2 neutrality, Scope 1 and Scope 2, at all sites by 2045. These ambitions provide a framework for planning and investment decisions across its manufacturing network.
In 2024 the company reports measurable progress toward these targets. It reduced direct and purchased-energy related emissions year on year, improved energy efficiency despite higher output and expanded the share of renewable electricity in its supply mix. Freudenberg Performance Materials has also defined medium- and long-term sustainability goals to guide short-term actions. In preparation for the forthcoming EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, the company has begun deploying software to calculate Product Carbon Footprints as a basis for future reporting and compliance.
Key 2024 performance indicators
- CO2 emissions, Scope 1 and 2, were reduced by another 3%, 29% less than in the base year 2020.
- Despite higher production levels, energy efficiency improved by 10%.
- 30% of all purchased electricity came from renewable sources, powering 25 production lines with green energy.
- The share of green energy in total energy consumption rose by 26% to 13.5%.
- The company’s biggest gas-powered asset was replaced with wet-scrubber technology, resulting in a reduction of approximately 4,000 tons of CO2.
According to the company, the new report consolidates its approach to managing material impacts and tracking progress against stated objectives. Further information: Sustainability Report - Freudenberg Performance Materials.
