TempControl by Lüdecke quick couplings: a new safety standard

TempControl by Lüdecke quick…

In the demanding plastics processing environment, where the temperatures of temperature-control media often exceed levels safe for humans, operator protection becomes as important as process efficiency. Lüdecke, a leader in connection systems, is launching its patented TempControl solution, which redefines safety standards for work with injection moulding machines and temperature-control systems.

Modern injection moulding processes require precise control of mould temperature, which involves the use of water or oil at temperatures often reaching as high as +220°C. Under such conditions, traditional quick couplings, although technically reliable, do not inform the operator of the actual burn hazard upon physical contact. The TempControl solution eliminates this "information gap," making mould changeover safer than ever before.

Intelligent thermal indication

The key innovation of the TempControl system is the use of a special thermochromic coating beneath the locking sleeve of the quick coupling. The operating principle is intuitive and based on a visual warning:

  • Blue: When the surface temperature of the quick coupling drops below +40°C, the element turns blue. This signals to the operator that the coupling can be safely disconnected and touched without the risk of burns.
  • Change to red: As the temperature rises above the safe threshold, set at +40°C, the coating reacts immediately by changing colour to red. This is a clear warning message: caution, the surface is hot.

This solution enables "non-contact" safety status diagnostics, which is particularly important in crowded production halls, where time pressure during mould changes often leads to inattention.

Dual protection: mechanics and visual indication

TempControl does not rely solely on colour-based warning. The system integrates proven TempSecure technology, which protects against unintentional disconnection. The automatic locking mechanism requires deliberate manual action (sliding and rotating the sleeve), which practically eliminates accidental uncoupling of the quick coupling.

In addition, these couplings offer:

  1. Visual confirmation of connection: In addition to temperature, the sleeve indicates correct locking status - only a fully secured coupling shows the full colour ring.
  2. High-temperature resistance: Made of high-quality brass and equipped with high-performance FKM seals, TempControl couplings operate reliably in the range from -20°C to +220°C.
  3. Intuitive operation: Despite the advanced safety features, the coupling process can be performed with one hand, significantly improving ergonomics.

Important information: the colour marking functions up to a temperature of +140°C, reflects the surface temperature of the quick coupling and serves as a visual indication.

Application in Industry 4.0

In the era of process optimisation and the pursuit of "Zero Accident" standards, implementing solutions such as TempControl is a step towards intelligent tooling infrastructure. The possibility of transferring this technology to Lüdecke coupling series makes safety-focused retrofitting of machine fleets fast and effective.

TempControl quick couplings are more than just a component of a temperature-control system. They are a preventive tool that combines mechanical reliability with an innovative approach to occupational health and safety. In an industry where seconds determine the cycle and safety determines production continuity, the solutions designed by LÜDECKE are becoming an essential standard for the modern injection moulding shop.

The video below shows how TempControl technology works and how the colour of the body beneath the locking sleeve changes depending on temperature, allowing ongoing monitoring of safety during work with hot media:
