UPM Biochemicals
Production of wood‑based renewable biochemicals replacing fossil raw materials, including bio‑glycols, lignin-based functional fillers and industrial sugars, supporting the transition to a circular economy.
Activity description
We specialise in developing and producing wood‑based, renewable biochemicals designed to replace fossil raw materials across various industrial applications. The product range is intended for integration into existing production and recycling processes, facilitating a transition to more circular and lower‑emission solutions.
Main products include:
- bio‑monoethylene glycol (BioMEG),
- bio‑monopropylene glycol (BioMPG),
- lignin‑based renewable functional fillers,
- industrial sugars.
The company is implementing an industrial‑scale biorefinery project in Leuna to convert solid wood into next‑generation chemicals; commissioning and start‑up were initiated in late 2024, and integrated commercial production is expected in the second half of 2025. Activities focus on reducing the carbon footprint, using climate‑neutral feedstock, and responsible forest resource management.
