Partnership between Braskem and Plantic develops ultra high barrier packaging

Partnership between Braskem…
The new eco PlasticT uses the already well known green plastic made from sugarcane.

Braskem, the largest petrochemical company in the Americas and the world leader in biopolymer production, and Plantic Technologies signed an agreement for the use of green plastic in packaging in the eco PlasticT product line. Made by Plantic, it is the first ultra-high barrier packaging made from renewable raw materials.

The use of the green plastic produced by Braskem will increase the renewable content of eco PlasticTM to over 90% without compromising the barrier properties already offered by the packaging. The major benefit of the polyethylene made from sugarcane is that it captures and sequesters up to 2.5 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere for each ton produced.
Manufacturers do not have to invest in new processing or packaging technologies in order to use the trays and sheets made from eco PlasticT. The rigid trays and sheets are available in a transparent version and a variety of colors, and even in multi-colored formats.

"Braskem's strategic vision is to become the world leader in sustainable chemicals by 2020. The partnering of Plantic products with Braskem's green plastic will lead to new packaging options that are not only better for the environment, but also offer superior performance for retailers and brand owners," said Marcelo Nunces, director of the Renewable Chemicals Business of Braskem.

Plantic's eco PlasticT made from green plastic is the high barrier packaging with the highest renewable content in the market," said Brendan Morris, CEO of Plantic Technologies. "Our partnership with Braskem brings together two plastics with excellent environmental performance to create an ultra-high barrier packaging with exceptional performance and environmental advantages," he said.
