Within two days the expert conference "FUTURE-PACKAGING – Packaging Technologies for Tomorrow" deals with the future of packaging and the scope of bioplastics.

Topic of the first day (07.03.2012) is "Active and Intelligent Packaging".

The mere wrapping for hygienic- and marketing-purposes is an activity of the past.Packaging materials for tomorrow must allow for absorbing and discharge of gases for optimisation of storage-life of the product. They should identify dangerous contents –for instance be salmonellae-active – and indicate this by colour-reaction. In case of
transformations of foods certain freshness-indicators react with metabolites of unwanted micro-organisms and thereby inform that the substance is decayed. On the other hand time-temperature-indicators signalise to the consumer by colour change of label that the cooling chain on the way to the shelf was broken.

Interactions between packaging and food were objectionable so far. Although controlled discharge of antibacterial acting substances via the packaging material could
enhance shelf-life – to give only one example. Nanotechnology still offers unexpected opportunities for such applications. But – how do you quantify nano particles? And what do authorities say? Is everything allowed what is still possible?

The second congress-day (08.03.2012) deals with "Bioplastics".
Raw material sources for bioplastics as corn, sugar beet, sugar cane, grain, different grasses and other renewable carbon-providers are variably effective and not everywhere available similarly. Existing in excess anywhere is certainly CO2 from incineration plants. You may generate bioplastics from this source, too.

Compounding, processing, market-developments and market-requirements, chances and limits of applications for food-packaging are highlighted by experts. Presented are
also actual conclusions of a transnational research project concerning the physical properties of PLA and other starch-based bioplastics, dependent upon raw materials
and additives.
