Makrolon sheets shape National Stadium in Romania

„Polycarbonate sheets, both solid and multi-wall types, are very sturdy but also elastic. Thanks to their low weight they can be installed without heavy substructures,“ says Dr. Volker Benz, Global Project Manager for major projects in the polycarbonate sheets sector of Bayer Material Science. The material has demonstrated its outstanding qualities in stadiums and other large construction projects in China, Italy, Germany, Poland, Vietnam, Brazil, and many other countries. With their high transparency, the solid sheets offer optimum protection from wind and weather, and sufficient light for healthy turf growth.

The new National Stadium Lia Manoliu in Bucharest, Romania, stands out for its maximum flexibility, and a light and bright design. The transparent solid Makrolon sheets for the roof above the stands are 8 mm thick and up to 12 m long, making them an ideal fit for this project.

The new arena in Bucharest can fit up to 55,000 sports fans, including 4,000 in VIP lounges. On six floors with a total of 108,000 square meters, the complex will also house an underground parking garage, a conference center, and restaurants.
