EU chemicals industry grows in 2017

EU chemicals industry grows… European Union chemicals production grew this year, while still remaining below pre-crisis level.

In an Aug. 24 report, Cefic said chemicals output within the EU was up by 3.1 percent during first half of 2017, compared to the same period last year.

Production rose in most chemicals sub-sectors, with significant rises in crop protection, basic inorganics and polymers.

Domestic sales within the EU single market rose 15 percent year-on-year to EUR 163.6 billion, while total sales grew 8 percent to EUR 203.1 billion during the first five months of 2017.

Citing an EU Commission business survey, Cefic said capacity utilization in the EU chemicals sector reached 84.1 percent in the second quarter of 2017, showing growth for the fifth consecutive quarter.

According to the „ifo World Economic Survey (WES) for the 3rd Quarter 2017”, experts assesed the current economic situation far more positively than evaluated in April on this year. However, expectations for the months ahead were slightly less optimistic. The world economy is expected to continue to recover at a slightly slower pace in the second half of 2017.

The economic climate primarily improved somewhat in the advanced economies, and especially in the euro area. In the advanced economies the economic situation this quarter was better compared to three months ago.
