Borealis at Plastpol 2009

Borealis at Plastpol 2009 Film innovations packed with converter and product benefits will take centre stage at the stand of Borealis, a leading provider of innovative, value creating plastics solutions, during Plastpol 2009 in Kielce, Poland.

Borealis will present its portfolio of added-value polyolefin packaging films offering step changes in downgauging, high productivity, ultra-transparency and outstanding mechanical properties at Stand G37 Pavilion G from May 26-29, 2009.

Packaging converters requiring sophisticated polyethylene (PE) film solutions can experience the easy, cost-effective processing and unique product properties offered by Borealis’ dedicated Borstar PE film grades. Based on Borealis’ proprietary multi-modal PE 2G (second generation) technology, the grades can be tailored to the precise performance requirements of a wide range of packaging applications in blends and co-extruded films.

The excellent processability of Borstar grades ensures consistent and straightforward extrusion, resulting in significant improvements in film quality and production regularity, and opportunities for higher output.

A typical example of this is PE film grade Borstar FB2310 which offers a unique spectrum of mechanical properties such as increased stiffness and high toughness, with downgauging possibilities.

Another example is Borstar FB4370 with higher stiffness which together with outstanding extrusion and high productivity is already paving the way for new packaging opportunities and efficiencies. It is widely used for high quality film in demanding packaging applications such as lamination or collation shrink films.

For the food packaging industry, Borealis presents new opportunities for product differentiation and productivity improvements. Its Borclear RE936CF random copolymer allows highest film production speed without orange peel (texture affecting optics) and at the same time sets new standards for the optical properties in the final film. Fast slip migration contributes to greater efficiency in the further conversion steps.

Further highlights aimed at the food industry include polypropylene (PP) grades from the Borclear and Borpact families. Featured grade Borpact BC918CF allows converters to combine excellent optical features before and after sterilisation, high stiffness combined with reasonable toughness and linear tear, and is compliant with all European and US food packaging regulations. These benefits make it the ideal grade for MAP trays for meat packaging, stand up pouches for convenience food and pet food, as well as label films.

Borclear RB707CF with its superior optical properties has been specially designed for conventional blown film technology with air cooling. It is being used successfully in transparent bread packaging film, lamination films and transparent stand up pouches, and is suitable for applications outside the food sector, such as transparent packaging films for textiles and tobacco and medical films.

With innovation firmly at the heart of its business strategy, Borealis will demonstrate how investments in its new Innovation Headquarters in Linz, Austria are putting its customer-focused development activities close to its key markets.

- Plastpol is the largest plastics processing event in Eastern Europe, attended by key decision makers from the fast-growing packaging industry in the region - comments Anton Wolfsberger, Development Manager for Business Unit Film and Fibre, Borealis. - In line with our commitment to delivering the innovations our customers’ need, this event presents a valuable opportunity to get first-hand information from the market on the latest challenges affecting packaging producers. In return we can highlight the processing efficiency, performance, environmental and waste reduction benefits Borealis’ broad portfolio of packaging films offers and support each customer with the most effective solution.
