The European Commission launched a public consultation in 2011 asking for individuals and businesses to give their views on whether the European Union should tax or altogether ban plastic carrier bags in order to tackle rising levels of plastic waste.
Symphony was invited to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Council and the Pacific Basin Economic Council in Hawaii 9-12 November 2011, and was represented by its CEO, Michael Laurier, and Group Deputy Chairman, Michael Stephen.
Waste Free Oceans held its first public conference in the presence of politicians, NGOs and industry representatives. The aim of this meeting was to promote initiatives which tackle the growing problem of marine litter and to raise awareness on the issue.
EU-Commissioner Potočnik apparently aims for a ban of carrier bags made from conventional plastics. At least it seems this way with the way the EU commission is currently running an Europe-wide survey, amongst other things.
