Ticona has extended its Hostaform S range of impact-resistant modified products by an outstanding type of polyoxymethylene (POM).
Extrudable Hostaform XT20 sets a new scale for cold impact resistance and weld-line strength to open the gate into new areas of application. Novoplast Schlauchtechnik GmbH extrudes pipes and hoses made of Hostaform XT20. Their burst strength and impact toughness meets most of the requirements set for technical pipe applications.
Ticona's latest generation of Hostaform S products comprises modified POM types marked by their advanced impact toughness, weld-line strength and fuel resistance. The new Hostaform XT20 is an enhanced design of Hostaform S 9362, 9363 and 9364. It expands Ticona's portfolio by a POM type that leaves all other impact-resistant modified POM materials behind to venture out into regions previously open to impact-resistant modified polyamide (PA 11/12) only. Apart from properties equivalent to PA 11/12, third-generation Hostaform POM provides greater low-temperature impact strength and improved chemical resistance, for example to fuel.
Owing to its excellent chemical resistance, mechanical properties and thermal stability, polyoxymethylene has long been a favoured product for automotive industry applications. Hostaform XT20 now adds a potential for completely new areas of application. Novoplast Schlauchtechnik GmbH in Halberstadt, Germany, for example extrudes pipes and hoses made of Hostaform XT20.
"The burst pressure and low temperature impact resistance of these pipes and hoses simply set a new scale. Their fusion behaviour has been improved by the modification process and allows us to employ standard components in the peripheral units along the extrusion line“ says Fred Liebzeit, Technical Director of Novoplast. The extruded POM hoses are used as protective sleeves of hand brake cables and elastic shafts of seat adjusters or sun roofs.
Service temperatures between -40°C and 80°C, a low water absorption, excellent mechanical and tribological properties plus the high-level chemical resistance particularly against fuel make third-generation Hostaform POM fit for very many applications, specifically in the field of automotive engineering. Due to Its ideal properties, it is facing a future in many other technical pipes and hoses including fuel lines, pneumatic braking systems, clutches, air-conditioning, power steering and many more.
